BBL Forever Young – The Basics

BBL (Broad Band Light) or BBL Laser is an innovative light-based treatment and the most powerful IPL (intense pulsed light) available in the market. The Forever Young modality is exclusive to the BBL platform. BBL works by gently heating the upper layers of the skin and thereby targeting the underlying skin cells to be stimulated and regenerated. BBL further enhances this process by stimulating deeper cells that are responsible for activating ‘youth’ genes and turning off genes that are associated with aging.

BBL Forever Young differs from other light treatments as it directly targets cells to ‘fight’ aging and genetically programs cells to be younger. It all starts off with the science behind gene expression, which is the process in which each gene is encoded or how it tells the body to create new cells. Some genes can ‘turn on or off’ depending on several factors such as aging or environmental factors. Naturally, as a person ages, the cells express themselves differently compared to someone who is younger. What makes BBL Forever Young remarkable is that it can turn off genes associated with aging and stimulate cells to create proteins and building blocks that produce more youthful looking skin. BBL Forever Young is clinically proven to influence gene expression with Stanford University leading the study.

During the treatment, eyes are protected using goggles or shields. There is usually no need for topical anaesthetic. You will feel a series of quick, warm ‘flicks’ as the treatment is carried out. As the procedure is non invasive, there is no downtime and most patients return to normal activities straight away. Some redness may be seen after the treatment, however this goes back to normal within a few hours. Sun avoidance should be expected especially during the healing time. Skin must always be protected from UV rays with sunscreen. If any pigment is treated, this will darken before breaking down over the following week.

The number of treatments required for each patient varies and BBL Forever Young may be combined with other treatment modalities in order to achieve the best results. Regular treatments at three month intervals are recommended to maintain the skin’s youthful appearance. BBL Forever Young can be performed in most areas of the face and body, but naturally the most damaged areas are the areas most exposed to UV. The most popular areas are the face, neck, decolletage, back of hands, chest and shoulders. The results are not instant, however they can be significant over time.

Halo Laser – The Basics

Halo laser treatment is the ultimate skin rejuvenation treatment which targets visible signs of aging such as sun damage. Sun damage includes skin conditions such as wrinkles, pigmentation, discolouration, uneven skin tone, enlarged pores and textural concerns. Using hybrid fractionated laser technology, results are superior and precise with minimal downtime and discomfort. Expected results from Halo include reduction of pigmentation, improvement in skin tone and texture, reduction in the size of pores, reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Skin will also appear to glow and be less dull. Halo treatments are generally done in one session, with multiple sessions needed only for more severe concerns or to safely treat darker skin types. For added benefit, Halo can be combined with other light devices such as the BBL, giving an enhancement to the overall results. BBL skin rejuvenation or BBL forever young modalities are perfect to combine with Halo laser treatment.

During the treatment, your physician will apply topical anaesthetic to increase your comfort. The skin is then treated by passing the laser handpiece over the skin multiple times in a crisscross pattern. Post treatment, the skin will be very hot and appear red and swollen. Post treatment instructions will be provided by the treating physician. Only bland moisturisers and sunscreen must be used in the first 24 hours. Soothing treatment serums or balms may be recommended by the physician to ease any discomfort post treatment. Skin will darken and start to shed after the initial 24 hours. It is safe to apply makeup after. Patients can usually return to normal activities but avoiding overexposure to the sun.

Initial results can be seen in as little as seven days, but the skin will continue to improve over the next three months. Care must be given with products that are used after the Halo treatment to ensure optimal results. Patients generally see the greatest improvement between the first 2-3 weeks after the treatment and results can last for years with proper maintenance.  Most people elect to repeat the treatment on an annual basis to ensure that the benefits of Halo laser treatment continue. Patients must ensure that the skin is always protected from UV exposure as this is important for the treated skin conditions to not re-occur.

Which treatment is right for me?

BBL Forever Young and the Halo Laser are two different types of light modalities and each treat the skin differently in order to achieve their intended results. The Halo laser would be the foremost recommendation for patients wanting a dramatic result to correct the visible signs of aging. Halo directly targets textural and pigmentation concerns and results are seen in a fairly short time. In order to be a good candidate for Halo, you must be accepting of the 7 days downtime and be willing to be strict with aftercare instructions. The results of Halo laser are cumulative, it is recommended to refresh your results yearly with additional treatment.

As BBL Forever Young relies on the turnover of the deep skin cells, results are not seen immediately – but rather works over a period of time. Think – you will look younger in 5 years time than you do now. The downtime for this treatment is very minimal in comparison to the Halo. You can expect to experience redness for up to a few hours post treatment and some temporary darkening of pigment as it is breaking down. The main aftercare advice is to be sun smart, wear SPF 50+ daily regardless of the weather. Although your results will be enhanced if Forever Young is paired with a complete skincare routine.

In short Halo Laser is better suited to those already experiencing signs of aging, whereas BBL Forever Young works best for those with first signs of aging as a preventative measure. Your treatment provider will help you decide which treatment is best for you.
